Lake Geneva weather and the best time to visit
The best time to visit Lake Geneva depends on what you want to do. Warm days suit boats and terraces, while the shoulder months suit the vineyards and city walks, and the winter weeks bring Christmas markets. The numbers below are climate normals, which describe a typical month and not a forecast for any particular week.
The figures come from the Geneva-Cointrin station of MeteoSwiss, for the normal period 1991 to 2020. They are not a forecast for 2026, and they say nothing about the temperature of the lake or of the mountains. Check a current forecast a few days before you travel.

Lake Geneva in December
December is cold, with a daily high of 5.6 °C and a low of −0.2 °C on average, and it is among the wetter months. It is also a month with events. The Christmas market in Montreux runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026, and the Rochers-de-Naye railway has a Christmas offer in the same weeks.
Some attractions pause for maintenance around the turn of the month. The Jet d'Eau in Geneva is closed for maintenance from 2 November to 3 December 2026, and the Salève cable car is closed from 2 to 26 November 2026. Plan your first week with those dates in mind, and keep indoor options ready for rainy days, such as the museums on the museums page.
