Where to stay in Lake Geneva: choose by transport
Different bases suit different plans on the lake, because the shore is long and the sights are spread along it. Geneva sits at the western end, Lausanne on the northern shore, and Vevey and Montreux in the east, while Évian and Yvoire lie on the French side. Trains run along the Swiss shore and boats cross to France, so the practical question is which connection you will use most.
This page does not rank towns. It lists what each place is close to, so you can match it to your plan. Prices for rooms, local taxes and the names of individual places are left out on purpose, as they change with the season and the property.

Where to stay in Geneva
Geneva is the base for anyone who flies in or plans several days of city sights. The airport train reaches the centre in 7 minutes, and the city's public transport is easy to use from there. If you want to see the fountain, the old town and the museums on the lake shore, you can do it from here without a car. Read the things to do in Geneva page for a plan of the sights.
Many accommodations in Geneva give guests a Geneva Transport Card at no charge. It is personal and not transferable. It covers public transport in zone 10, including the city buses and trams, the regional trains and the Mouettes lake shuttles. It does not cover the CGN lake cruises, so keep a separate ticket for them. Your host can send the digital link up to 3 days before you arrive, which also covers the airport ride.

Lake Geneva Switzerland hotels: Lausanne, Montreux and Vevey
Lake Geneva Switzerland hotels cluster in the same towns as the sights. Choose by the place you will visit most often.
Lausanne-Ouchy
Ouchy is the waterfront of Lausanne. The boat landing is here, the Olympic Museum stands at Quai d'Ouchy 1, and the metro line m2 to the old town stops at Ouchy-Olympique. It is a good base if you want to take the boat to France. Read more on the Lausanne page.
Montreux
Montreux is the base for Chillon Castle and for the mountain and panoramic trains. Bus 201 and the S5 line reach Chillon. For the trains, see the Golden Pass Express page.
Vevey
Vevey puts you close to Chaplin's World, which has its own bus from the town. The weekly markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays are a bonus on the way.
Évian
Évian is the French end of the boat line to Lausanne. A night in France is not the same as a night in a Swiss town: the boat is a cross-border service and you need valid identification. Plan transport and tickets accordingly.
How to choose between the bases
Start from the days that matter most. For a flight in or out, Geneva saves time on the first and last day. For boat trips and the Olympic Museum, Lausanne-Ouchy keeps both within sight of your door. For Chillon, the railways and the old town above the water, Montreux is the natural choice. Vevey suits a quiet base between the two, and Évian suits those who want a day on the French shore.
Distances are short and trains are frequent, so you can also split a longer stay between two bases, for example Geneva first and Montreux last. See getting to Lake Geneva for the train links, and the boat page for the crossings to France.
Check three practical points before you book: whether your accommodation qualifies for the Geneva Transport Card, how far the nearest train or boat stop is, and what the arrival rules are if you are staying in France.
A walk that starts at your door
If you stay in the centre of Lausanne, a private walk with a local guide can start at your accommodation. The route can be adapted to your interests. Entrance tickets and drinks are extra, and the guide helps you book the visits you want. Look at the details of the offer before you book, especially for local transport.
